Muscat tours prisons, calls for more resources
Labour leader Joseph Muscat this morning visited the prisons at Corradino and called for more resources for prisoner rehabilitation programmes.
He was taken on an extensive tour of the facility, meeting inmates and staff.
In comments to the press afterwards, Dr Muscat said it was important that prisoner rehabilitation programmes were well resourced so that the prisoners could become citizens who would contribute to society and for the number of repeat offenders to fall.
He also called for better conditions of work for the staff, saying they were working very long hours which would be unacceptable by European standards had this not been a disciplined force.
Dr Muscat said there had been an improvement in the infrastructure of the prison although more remained to be done.
Asked about parole, Dr Muscat said the MLP was awaiting the government's proposals and would then discuss the issue.
Asked to comment about the reported police beatings of a migrant at he weekend, he said that he could not condone gratuitous violence, regardless of who the person was. He understood that the police at times needed to use an element of force but there was no explanation for any violence after a person was handcuffed. Dr Muscat said he would await the outcome of an investigation.

Well, i'm savvy enough to see beyond the empty words and all the xeneggati of the new actor in town. In only takes a few days to realize the emptiness and the opportunism and all the fake acts displayed by JM. Every move is calculated and stage managed PR.
Most politicians in the world are selfish people who's in the game for themselves and their greed for power. Malta is no exception. However JM's acts are ultra offensive, since he treats people like idiots thinking that we drool at his sight and he considers himself to be God's gift to the simple and unrefined people of Malta. JM has been living in his glass house for far too long.
Fortunately local people are more intelligen that that.

A responable Opposition is not here to criticise only, it must offer alternatives. Otherwise such an Opposition will be doomed to be in opposition for a very long time to come.

I do not recall that Dr Muscat has ever condemned any persons before any police investigations. Maybe I am mistaken but can anyone remember if he ever did?

He is not the PM, he is not obliged to answer anyone. And for that our PM is always avoiding any hot questions. Go ask the PM about JPO and see if you ll ever get a reply and see who is hiding behind who.
PN supporters as usual try to justify their PM and character assassinate the opposition.
Well guess Malta is fed up with neverending bills, taxes, corruption, inefficiencies and bad governance. And most of all were fed up of 'Liars' and those who protect them

If, as you say, by Dr Muscat's words you feel treated like an idiot, it could just be that Dr Muscat is right on all counts and that it's you who has found yourself. The best cure I can suggest to come back amongst us normal beings is to remove those blue blinkers and start thinking with your head. Otherwise you'll continue to think of yourself as an idiot.

What kind of attitude is this i may ask? Once elected JM proposed a new party, fresh of ideas & willing to collaborate with the government.....
Lately all they're doin is to wait for the government to set the picture on every issue, then if they don't agree, they slam him, if they do, they try to fine-tune it making us believe the idea is theirs......

When MLP used to fire out accusations and policies left, right and centre, everyone said that they are not serious and what they say is always false. MLP now have a new leader who has been in office for less than a month that is being very cautious on what to say. What's wrong/immature about this? I'm sure that when the time comes, MLP's policies and opinions will be very strong and justified. If you think that Joseph Muscat is the kind of person that never takes the first step and is never adventurous, please go to his website and see his speeches during the leadership campaign. And remember the first brave step to appoint non-MLP experts to issue the regulations for MLP media. When MLP is ready, I'm sure a lot of courageous first steps will be taken. It's only fair that one waits at least for all the administration to be changed and settle down before giving judgements. For those who are without patience and want immediate replies, there's always the one-man band on the other side...

It's amazing how JM treats the Maltese like idiots. When it's convenient, he waits for police investigations, when it's convenient they codemn other people before conclusiion of police investigations, and at other times they sit on a fence. Who's he kidding, kids like him maybe?

As someone who is open minded about who to vote for in the next election, I must admit that I am not overly impressed with the "lets see what the PN say first" approach that Muscat seems to be adopting.
Yes, I know it is not always the case, but it it there more often than not.
Personally I would like to see firm policies.
MLP should not act like an opposition looking to trip up the other party, stop being reactionary and commit to firm decisions. Then you will get votes. If you are going to be pointing out the mistakes without offering solutions..... well, look what happened at the last election.
Hindsight is 20/20, anybody can do that. You've got four and a half years, give me a choice.
