The fines generated by VAT last year and in the first quarter of this year amounted to €8,319,937 and €2,467,623 respectively.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech told Labour MP Evarist Bartolo that €2,932,186 were pardoned in 2007 and €632,073 in the first three months of this year. These were not necessarily generated in the said time spans and also included fines generated in previous periods.
