The GWU said today that it shared the GRTU's view that the government should lower duties on diesel and said it was prepared to join the chamber and any other organisation to speak with one voice against high fuel prices.
The union said it had long been arguing that the government should not profit from higher fuel prices by raising its revenue from fuel duties. The union also complained that the government was ignoring the social partners and not consulting the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.
Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt speaking in Parliament yesterday said there could not be sectoral solutions to high fuel prices. He also pointed out that reducing tax on fuels still left the question of where the funds would be recovered from.
