Malta joins its European partners in expressing its deep concern at the deterioration of the political and economic situation in Zimbabwe.

"Malta believes that the way forward to bring stability to Zimbabwe is to allow the people of Zimbabwe the possibility to exercise their fundamental democratic right to vote and freely express their political will," Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said.

"Malta is also concerned about the possible effects of the Zimbabwe crisis on the stability of the region and calls on African countries and organizations, especially the African Union and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to enhance their engagement with renewed determination in order to help resolve the current crisis as soon as possible."

The minister said in a statement that Malta fully supports the position taken by the EU to stand ready to support and re-engage with a democratic, legitimate and reform-minded government in Zimbabwe.
