Being a bit of a sceptic, I wonder how seriously to take Daniela Borg Mizzi's apparent reassurance regarding emissions testing (ADT To Step Up Action On Emissions, June 24).

Is this the response of someone who has realised, after all the supportive letters and comments I have received to my previous letters, that she had better say something positive and in the meantime the issue will again die a death for another six months or so? Had this issue not been forcibly raised again, would we still be living in blissful assurance that the emissions problem is well under control, and we are doing a good job? Please let me assure Ms Borg Mizzi that I, and supporters, have at heart the health and wellbeing of Maltese residents, the government's budget (i.e. the taxpayer's) for treatment of resulting health conditions, and the tourist industry (many come to Malta for fresh, clean air and, being sadly disillusioned, do not return).

Before reading Ms Borg Mizzi's response, I had already prepared a letter for The Times asking readers with similar concerns as mine to meet at a given time and place to record vehicles' illegal, health-threatening emissions. I have postponed (not cancelled) this for around a week, in the hope that Ms Borg Mizzi can supply some reassuring, positive advancements and possible prosecutions in the pipeline.

If not, we will certainly continue on our mission to clean up Malta.
