Michael Caruana, of Mellieħa, recently obtained a doctorate in Philosophy of Mathematics from the University of Oxford.
The degree was conferred by Chancellor of the University, Lord Patten of Barnes, during a ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford.
During his time at Oxford, Caruana was awarded an overseas research scholarship by St Anne's College. He worked under the supervision of Prof. Terry Lyons.
Before going to Oxford, Caruana graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics and OR (2003) from the University of Malta. In 2006, Caruana was awarded a visiting research scholarship by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and spent five years working with Prof. Franco Flandoli at the University of Pisa.
He also received an award from the Institut Mittag-Leffler in Sweden to attend their research programme on stochastic partial differential equations.
Caruana has recently co-authored his first book which has been published as a volume of Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics.
Caruana currently holds a post-doctoral research position in the department of Mathematical Sciences and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Camrbidge.
