Departure tax should be abolished straight away

The government should abolish the air departure tax with immediate effect, Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday said.

AD chairman Arnold Cassola said it was shameful that the government intended to retain departure tax for another four to five months since the European Commission had long declared this tax illegal. "Rather than a victory for citizens' rights, this is taking people for a ride," Dr Cassola said.

He also called for the removal of the departure tax levied on passengers using ferries to Sicily, which he claimed the government was planning to retain.

My friend, this tax was introduced by Alfred Sant and the MLP. Giving the hypocrocy that exists in Malta, I do not think that you complained either at the time.

If Alfred Sant and the MLP had its' way with the EU referendum the tax most likely would remain their for years to come.

The governments have become used to doing as they please. there is never any real opposition to anything round here! We kinda accept whatever is thrown at us as though we owe our existence to these people who are meant to serve US!

According to blue-eyed boy Charles Camilleri, Alternattiva leader should 'shut up'. In few days' time he will tell the EU Commission to 'shut up' as well.

Dear Arnold i know that you and your party has nothing to lose but please do not take up where Harry left, criticising everything without offering alternative solutions. It very easy indeed to do the work of armchair critic Any suggestion how Government would make up for the shortfall.? @ J. Buttigieg Does this include the amount collected during labour Governments. Remember John this tax was introduced by Labour to penalise the well to do who could afford to go abroad.

It's pretty insane that Malta can get away with so much when the interests of Maltese citizens are at stake. Makes pretty much a mickey out of the European Commission I say.

The EU should make the Maltese Governmant to pay back the ILLEGAL departure tax that has been paid since we joined th EU.
