Here in Għajnsielem there is some controversy about who should maintain the main square - by sweeping dead leaves that fall off the trees, cutting the grass from the asphalt cracks, as well as renovating the surroundings such as the benches, lamps, lamp posts and whatever necessary to make this square clean and attractive.

The Gozo Curia claims that the square belongs to it. So far so good, but what is the problem in letting the local council take care of it and carry out the necessary maintenance?

The local council had always done its utmost, with the co-operation of the Gozo Ministry, to keep our village square in a decent state.

However, in the past 18 months, things have changed. This could be because the local council came up with the idea of erecting a fountain in the middle of this square.

This project may be controversial possibly because not enough information was given out.

The matter has also caused some friction between the archpriest and the local council, and this is doing a lot of harm to our village.

My suggestion is to hold a public meeting to explain the situation and let those present, particularly local groups, put their views forward.

Hopefully this should establish who should maintain our village square and thus make it an attractive feature of our village.
