The Malta School of Art, Valletta, recently held its graduation and prize giving ceremony and announced various activities it is planning for the summer.

During the ceremony, which was presided by Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli in lieu of Education and Culture Minister Dolores Cristina, first prizes were awarded to students attending the school's courses in drawing and painting, 3D studies in plasticine, plaster and clay, wood and stone sculpture, gold and silver smithing, gilding, print making and history and appreciation of art, while special prizes were awarded to other deserving students.

The tutor in charge at the school, Joseph M. Micallef, congratulated all the prize-winners and diploma holders, and thanked the various prize sponsors as well as numerous individuals and organisations that co-operate with the school.

Mr Puli acknowledged the contribution given over the years by the School of Art to the local art world and expressed his appreciation to the tutoring staff and his admiration to the students for attending the school after a day's work or study.

The event's programme included a poetry recital and an IT presentation on the school's participation in various national cultural activities throughout the year.

The school announced that for the third year running it is holding summer art courses for adults, teenagers and children aged eight or older. The courses will consist of 15 lessons, held twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays during July, August and September, either in the morning from 9 to 11.30 a.m., or in the evening from 5 to 7.30 p.m.

An Open Day will also be organised on August 3 from 9.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the public and prospective students to visit the school's studios and view an exhibition of works by a group of post-diploma students set up in the school's foyer.

Talks related to art appreciation by local artists and art historians as well as on other related topics such as photography and IT are also being planned.

For more information, call the school on tel 2123 4351 between 9 a.m. and noon.
