Meet Michelle Muscat

The Labour Party’s new First Lady, Michelle Muscat, is set to play a role in her husband Joseph’s political activity, but her first priority remains her family and maintaining a welcoming home.

Indeed, for the 34-year-old from Rabat, life revolves around their eight-month old twins Etoile Ella and Soleil Sophie, her dream come true.

“They were long-awaited,” she said with a soft voice and a tender look in her eyes.

She explained how, after suffering a miscarriage she had a “terrible” pregnancy while carrying her twins.

“I had nine months of total bed rest which, for my lifestyle, was a change that influenced my entire outlook on life.”

She spent the last trimester of her pregnancy at Karin Grech Hospital. “The hospital stay was a life-changing experience in itself,” Michelle said, adding that while there she met people from all social strata and could observe the different backgrounds.

“There’d be those whose family would bring cooked food with them. Then there was this woman who had to feed five or six children and was so used to simple life that she could not get herself to eat the chicken or any other decent meal served in hospital. Instead, she would head for the pantry and eat bread and butter, because that’s what she’s used to.”

Having had previous experience in the political scene – she was Alfred Sant’s personal assistant and before that worked in a Labour minister’s secretariat – Michelle had heard about families in difficult situations, “but when you actually live with these people, you gain a totally different perspective on these issues”.

Her experience in hospital has in some way shaped a facet of the role she wants to take on as the wife of the leader of the Malta Labour Party. She explained how, for one to be a political person, one had to be human, and emphasised that politics should be about caring for other people.

“For me it means making each day a better day for everyone.”

Joseph follows the same ideal, she quickly added. “He believes that we have to work hard so that we can get the best out of our country. We are here to make a difference. I believe Joseph can do it, and I’m going to be there to back him”.

Michelle said that the experience she gained while working for Dr Sant would help her better support her husband.

“Working with such an intellectual person was an experience where I learnt to appreciate how decisions are taken, and to be loyal to them whether I agree with them or not.” She added that she was proud to have worked with Dr Sant since he is “a sincere, honest and hard working person”.

Admitting that Joseph’s win meant that she had to re-schedule her time at home, Michelle is adamant that her top priority will always be her family, and the plus side to Joseph’s appointment is that he is now more in Malta than in Brussels.

Although she now has more on her plate, her children and her husband won’t be the ones to suffer. “I wasn’t planning this. I was planning to be a full-time mother at least for the next three years until they start attending school,” she adds.

Michelle plans out her days and feels lucky that the twins tend to sleep early, allowing her and her husband to attend social evenings knowing that the children are fast asleep. On the other hand, Etoile and Soleil tend to wake up early. However, Joseph takes care of their first feed and the first diapers-change. He then spends an hour playing with them before he leaves for work.

What has gone out of the window are her hobbies. Michelle and her friend from New York design jewellery made of semi-precious stones.

“My friend designs prêt-a-porter whereas I do individual designs such as bridal jewellery”. Other hobbies include swimming – which she is determined the twins will learn early – and interior design. She has designed the interior of her house in Burmarrad, and also some of her friends’ houses.

Michelle and Joseph met in 1995 – March 19 – at a Labour Youth Forum activity. She was there because she needed to interview someone for a university assignment. She recounts how she had met Joseph previously, tried talking to him, but he had cut the conversation short. “He was under the impression that I was going out with someone else so he felt that it was (in his own words) ‘no use wasting time on you,’” she laughed. But on the day of the activity, it was another story. “We spent three hours chatting,” and matters took off.

The couple took a short break from their relationship since Michelle was going to sit for her university final exams and “didn’t want anything to deviate me from my studies... something which Joseph took very badly”. They then got back together after two months and crowned their love in 2001.

She describes Joseph as being a very romantic person. “He’s very good at remembering dates, and he does manage to find time to buy gifts”. When they do not go out on Saturday nights and Sundays, he does the cooking but during the week all he prepares is their coffee in the morning which they take while discussing their day’s agenda.

She stands up, excuses herself and heads towards the kitchen. She’s preparing stuffed aubergines for dinner and needs to make sure they’re ready in time.

“I love cooking – it’s one of the hobbies which I won’t be giving up. It also feels good to know that we’re eating healthily and our home is still well looked after.”

Please do not try to defend Dr Andrew Borg Cardona, President of the Chamber of Advocates and rabid anti-Labour scribbler. He started all this with his trite comment "if you dip your toe in the pool, you have to expect the fish to bite". This was a veiled warning to Michelle Muscat that since she is now a public figure she is fair game to his jibes and mockery and those of his unmentionable sister in arms.Last Saturday the learned Dr Andrew Borg Cardona, President of the Chamber of Advocates warned Joseph Muscat that he was going to "insult him mightily" in his drier than the Sahara weekly column. Now it was Michelle's turn to be put on guard by the learned lawyer.

Mrs Kate Gonzi's toes have been in the pool for a very long time and no fish dared even take a nibble. That is how it should be in a civilised society in spite of provocative and inane comments such as the one that started all this
Keith Grech (on 30/6/08)
@ABC
The only thing ABC should bite is his tongue. What a waste!
Charles Cassar (on 30/6/08)
@ all the rabid MLP fanboys - wake up guys, ABC didn't actually say anything bad about michelle muscat. You're looking stupid.
@ all the rabid PN fanboys - your personal attacks disgust me. Dr Gonzi would be ashamed of you.
Fiona Spiteri (on 30/6/08)
To Graham Crocker
Have you ever criticized the maltese and italian name "Stella"? If you need it translated, it means just the same as Etoile!! Do you have any "cruel comments" to spare about such beautiful names as Etoile and Soleil? Sorry if I am the first person to tell you this, but do you know the meaning of your own name? Graham = A Grey House!!!! Any cruel comments about this?
Also, as a mother myself I could vow that difficult pregnancies become part of the mother's life. It is an experience that one won't ever forget. So if I am reading an article "Meet Michelle Muscat" I find it only human to read about her own experiences. So please stop writing nonsense!!

Hey all you stone age people why do you feel the need to criticise other people just beacause they are public figures please grow up or better still EVOLVE
Jimmy John M Vella (on 30/6/08)
Two very pretty first ladies :) Both Ms. Gonzi and Ms. Muscat seem like extraordinary women who play a role in thie husbands' lives ('behind every great man is a great woman'?) but who nonetheless know that their alliance remains primarily with the running of their households and with caring for their families. How pleasing :)

Well Done Ms. Muscat! I classify you (as well as Ms. Gonzi) as the typical Hardian drawing room figure; the woman endowed with great mannerisms and high standards of etiquette as well as the woman who seems to instinctively and naturally always know what is best for her family ;)

@ Graham Crocker

Well done, Mr Crocker. An excellent appraisal displaying a good insight to explain in detail ABC's initial and misunderstood comment on this feature. Your balanced, constructive comments are appropriate and relevant to the theme regarding public figures and the Press.

What I fear will be the outcome is that you're likely to be branded a "character assassin" - a term some Labour apologist ignoramuses systematically apply to critics (even those dishing out constructive criticism) who dare to post intelligent or witty comments to criticise their little tin gods.

A brief glance through the various TIMES blogs will show the hullaboloo that follows every time ABC and DCG exercise their right of free speech to post comments of a political nature. As Paul Micallef rightly observed, observers having a basic level of intelligence soon realise that some comments reflect the author's mediocre level of education and an even poorer civil debating style. Such types can best be appropriately described by the Maltese term "IMSIEKEN".
C.R. Taliana (on 30/6/08)
Humpty Dumpty and The Evil Witch ARE CRAP so never expect any comment of theirs to be smell like fresh spring flowers!
Graham Crocker (on 30/6/08)
Well if I was in the political scene (which I'm not and don't want to be), I wouldn't put my family in the limelight unless I was really really desperate. (especially children....with rare names such as Star and Sun "???" ) & I've already heard cruel comments (botti) about their "names".

Also I believe things such as difficult pregnancies are not something to be made public, you know J.Muscat, privacy is another way of showing respect & highlighting personal issues can make somebody like your wife subject to verbal abuse behind her back or in her face, by people who hate/dislike you for Partisan/Personal reasons. i.e. its is an obvious risk.

Question. What is the role of a opposition Party First lady might I ask?
what I mean is, is it worth putting family at risk of being targeted by media & public?

Personally I would have preferred it if he kept the children out of the political arena, because children definitely do not belong there.
louis grech (on 29/6/08)
Local politics has never been in such a sorry state. Poor Malta! This is purely leadership crisis.
David Farrugia (on 29/6/08)
Never mind what Humpty Dumpty and the Evil Witch say.
Their arguments are crap.
John Simpson (on 29/6/08)
Mr ABC
Do you think that you are the only perfect gentleman on this island? Tell me, why do you hate the woking class people so much???
J. Stivala (on 29/6/08)
It seems it's panic stations time for certain bloggers !
Charles Cassar (on 29/6/08)
Hm it seems that I have committed the grave mistake of underestimating the power of ignorace.
Paul Micallef (on 29/6/08)
I am not going to refer my comment to anyone in particular. Those who have some basic intelligence will surely know what I mean.

I really pity some of the commentators. Their comments give an indication that they need mental help.

Proper word in Maltese. IMSIEKEN.
Ethelbert Schembri (on 29/6/08)
He is our leader so you can put it as you please .

Thanks for pointing that out !!
Ivan Camilleri (on 29/6/08)
All i see here is just an attempt to soften the image labour aquired over the years. This model was adopted by L.Gonzi with his wife & as usual MLP followed suit.......this time with "CALL ME JOSEPH"......

It takes more than a wife beside you to persuade the nation that you have the best politics.....

Too much harm was done in the past......let the delegates sing & clap now!!!!!!!(Ivan Camilleri, Sliema)
dominic zammit (on 29/6/08)
I know very well that Michelle Muscat is a hard working person, always with a smile, someone who knows how to put up a brave face even at hardest of times, very much down to earth and straight to the point . She surely is a good mum to her twins; she's got a well grounded knowledge in politics and, needless to say, will make the perfect First Lady of the soon coming next Prime Minister. As being friends of Joseph and Michelle and sharing the same hopes for future, I and my wife Aslihan, are wishing them the best of everything for the sake of our beloved country.
malcolm tortell (on 29/6/08)
@ Ethelbert

You mean "behind you" not "after you" don't you?
Claude Mallia (on 29/6/08)
Oh ho ho ho! Seems like some lady is getting the limelight while another is getting the Primadonna role! No surprise! A new tendency?? At least this new Primadonna fits her job, has been auditioning for quite some good time!
Ethelbert Schembri (on 29/6/08)
From the little I know them they are ready to serve and in doing so it will bring coments and why not critique . They are ready and know that they will come !

But no one will ever except them to tolerate cheap coments and low level critique especialy familiar ones !!!!
That is why Dr Muscat did the comisión for ONE press to prevent such things on others .
There are lot of people that expect everyone to follow suit !

I'm merely making the observation !!

Thanks Michelle and Joseph, keep up the good work we are after you !!
Charles Sammut (on 29/6/08)
The next first lady of the USA will soon be Michelle Obama. It also looks very likely that Michelle Muscat will also one day be the Maltese PM"s wife. I know that Princeton educated Mrs Obama made some statements that she would like to take back. Hopefully Mrs Muscat weighs whatever she says carefully because since she is now in the limelight whatever she says could come back and haunt her husband..
Anthony A. Mifsud (on 29/6/08)
@ABC, Your sick.

Ms. Michelle, a perfect Match you and your hubby, weldone.

Toni
Franco (on 29/6/08)
I do not agree with ABC's comment - this article is similar to many others that appear in the press (glossy or otherwise) on a regular basis. Mrs. Muscat will only enter the political arena when she makes a political statement - I see none in this article. I do not recall Kate Gonzi making any political statement for that matter - I do not count standing by your husband's side as a statement of policy per se but obviously that is my opinion, I could be wrong.
Raymond Sammut (on 29/6/08)
"the experience she gained while working for Dr Sant would help her better support her husband." What a load of bull.
David Gatt (on 29/6/08)
@Andrew Borg-Cardona

Actually, I never expect anything better from you.
Liam Kelly (on 28/6/08)
Erm Ms Mifsud.....this isn't America....its Nappy not Diaper.
tut tut tut.....Will her children soon be attending Kindergarten as well?!

Cringe-worthy excuse for english.
Stephen Abela (on 28/6/08)
Very intelligent person , full of energy and love for her family ! Smart ,fresh look ! I like her ! Good choice indeed Joseph !
Mark Spiteri (on 28/6/08)
What is wrong with people like ABC.
Give this lady a chance, all she spoke of is of her personal life and family not bragging what she does for charity , unlike certain woman who like to be remembered and noticed in that way.

Anthony Mizzi (on 28/6/08)
@ABC.
Quite an uncalled for comment on Michelle Muscat, and if there is nothing to comment about, just don't.

Even the tone it seems to be said in, feels sarcastic , and certainly uncalled for.

Michelle is not only Labour Party's new First Lady, but she is a Lady, a dothful mother, a loving spouse and certainly compliments Joseph ion the new role he has undertaken.

It is not only Joseph, but Joseph and Michelle aaaaand her beautiful family that are finding a place in our hearts with the example they are setting to all.
J.Borg (on 28/6/08)
I think that in Malta we have a new hobby for some people....character assasination.
Why don't you let people be and work also for a new begining......grow up people....we don't need the kind of people like ABC and DCG...stop spreading hatred.
A Grech (on 28/6/08)
Andrew, instead of picking and wasting your time on criticizing others, why don't you use your brain to throw in some good ideas for the government and whoever to follow. At times, I find you more of a comic than a well meaning columnist.

You and Daphne must be twins.
Olivia Galea-Seychell (on 28/6/08)
I have known Michelle since our University days, way back in 1992. Michelle was always
optimistic and altruistic. She would be the first person to help anyone in need. I am glad to read the comments of persons who met her during the recent past because it shows that Michelle has kept her spirit but has also grown into a mature woman. Michelle if you happen to read this message, take care. You deserve the best because you have always given the best to all those around you.
Albert gauci Cunningham (on 28/6/08)
I know Michelle from a much younger age in her Xemxija boathse.....apart from being a very nice person she comes from a very humble and friendly family.....with a very warm and down to earth mum---Lelina----

Heart felt wishes and all the best for the future to you and your family
From your next door ,neighbouring ,huge ,loud and Birkirkara family ( ta Zozi)!!! Politically we are different but we definately know a nice person when we see one and MICHELLE is one of them!!!!
J. Borg (on 28/6/08)
Why can't we just leave the spouses living their own lives - rather than having them parading with their politician spouses (be they male or woman). It’s getting so pathetic.
If they really want to involve themselves - they should take up serious philanthropic work.
Andrew Borg-Cardona (on 28/6/08)
Glad to see that most people took my comment in the spirit in which it was intended. Indeed, what I said for Ms Muscat goes for Ms Gonzi and any other spouse who chooses to participate in the political game.
Maria Pace (on 28/6/08)
What an amazing lady she is..I had the opportunity to meet her personally once when she was staying at Karin Grech since a relative of mine was staying there too. From the little I know her, I can say that she is such a great person and one who works increasingly hard to keep her family content. May God be with you, Mrs.Muscat and Bless those two darling little angels.
D Fenech (on 28/6/08)
@ Andrew Borg Cardona
Come on ,surely your comment is uncalled for. What you said is true but unnecessary! She sounds like a fine young woman. I feel sorry for her really but until the evil tongues start to wag, let her be!
Charles Cassar (on 28/6/08)
Good point ABC - but anyone who finds things to criticise in what she said in the interview wouldn't be doing his own credibility much good, don't you think? I trust even the most rabid of PN fanboys will have enough sense to avoid making such great asses of themselves.
Frans Sammut (on 28/6/08)
@ ABC
Point taken. Now allow me to add, with all respect to the Gospels, "Give to Michelle Muscat what is MM's and to Kate Gonzi what is KG's." You see, what is good for Michelle is good for Kate,
and vice-versa.

I'm merely making another observation, really ... in the same spirit that you made yours, ça va?
Anthony Borg (on 28/6/08)
What a pathertic comment from Andrew Borg-Cardona. He must be itching to start Mrs. Muscats character assassination.
Fiona Spiteri (on 28/6/08)
Spending 5 weeks with Michelle Muscat while expecting my son at Karen Grech, I could not but thank her for her sincere friendship, honesty, for being there to listen, for her good sense of humour and for her charisma. Her presence made my stay much easier at that time.
Congratulations goes to Michelle for her new role which really suits her!! May God be with you and your loved ones. xxx
Andrew Borg-Cardona (on 28/6/08)
It is to be hoped that if (when?) comments that are less than fawning are made about this young lady, it will be remembered that she chose to enter the public arena voluntarily with this interview. Nothing wrong with that, or with anything she said, quite the contrary, but if you dip your toe in the pool, you have to expect the fish to bite.

I'm merely making the observation.
