A constable almost strangled his 36-year-old wife at home yesterday morning only to frantically call the police for help after the alleged act, the police said.

The woman was administered first aid and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where she was certified as being in a critical condition.

Neighbours in Triq il-Magħluq, Marsascala residing in the same block as the couple were shocked but would not comment on the incident.

The policeman, who was described by colleagues who spoke to The Times as a quiet type, was treated for minor injuries and was referred to Mount Carmel Hospital.

Initial police investigations showed that the man had tried to strangle his wife. Sources said the man used the wire of a mobile phone charger to do this.

Magistrate Anthony Vella is holding an inquiry in tandem with a police investigation.
