The 27-year-old man whose life was claimed at Ċirkewwa, while he was enjoying his Sunday morning bike-ride on his way to Gozo on Sunday, June 22, gives cause for alarm.
In Ċirkewwa Road, vehicles of all sizes and types can be seen speeding along, all heading for the Gozo ferry.
When such an accident takes place, there is the tendency to blame the bike riders for careless driving. However, this is not always the case.
I will abstain from making any judgment on this particular case, but I cannot refrain from bringing to mind another tragic accident of eight years ago when two young people lost their lives in almost the same spot. It was August 15, 2000 when my family and I were celebrating the silver wedding anniversary of my sister and her husband and through an sms, my husband was informed of the tragic accident of his niece Rachel Barbaro-Sant and her friend Clyde Camilleri - both in their prime of life.
It resulted that another person was to blame. This is no consolation for the parents, however.
It is well-known to the authorities that Ċirkewwa Road is a dangerous stretch. Why not do something about it to avoid further tragic mishaps? I am sure that ADT and/or police authorities know much better than myself what could be done. Let us bear in mind that one life lost is one life too many.
