Floriana traffic lights

Candidus II, in On The Dot of June 23, seemed to be against the traffic lights in St Anne Street, Floriana. The contributor writes that the underpasses are in fact a safer bet for pedestrians.

In Floriana a great percentage of the residents are senior citizens and going up and down the steps and ramps of the underpasses is a health hazard to the many with heart problems and other physical impediments. The underpasses are also filthy especially when some big occasion like Carnival and events on St Publius Square (the Granaries) take place, such as the Isle of MTV show. These underpasses are often used as toilets and are not safe for women or old people using them at certain times of the evening.

Candidus II should know that the traffic lights near the Lion Fountain and those in St Anne Street are synchronised; that is the red light shows at the same time at both points.

I assure Candidus II that the traffic lights in St Anne Street are there to stay.

This idea of local councils hijacking their respective areas, completely disregarding the needs of the rest of the population, not to mention tourists, needs to be looked into.
We pay our taxes to be used for the benefit of the entire nation and we expect decisions to be in line with the policies of the government of the day. If irresponsible practices are not seen to by the government, then the government is also guilty of allowing the irresponsibility too.
Several decisions are being taken in Floriana and the only motive behind them is to make Floriana out of bounds for the rest of the population.
Take the parking issue. It is 150 mins everywhere, even though it is illegal. Not only that, but now they are installing dangerous spikes on the edge of pavements so that cars cannot open their doors if they park in the few remaining streets that are without the parking limit. Shame.

I have seen senior citizens disregarding traffic lights and underpasses in St Anne Street and cross this same street from the point where it is devided by the lion's fountain. I suggest a policeman stays at this point in order to take the names of all those people who cross this busy street at all times.

How can the traffic lights be synchronised if one of them is a pedestrian light ... ie activated by means of the push button?

Chev. Bonello. I was sure that the light were there to stay. In fact you might remember better that me that they were installed temporarily as can be still seen from the cables.
