Large group of migrants rescued
The Italian coast Guard ship Fiorillo has rescued a group of illegal immigrants off Malta.
The migrants, numbering about 70, were in a boat some 37 miles off Malta. They are being brought to Malta this evening.
Two groups having a total of 57 migrants were landed by the AFM this morning after being detected in two boats last night.

I believe that only a few have applied for refuge status, what about the others, shouldn't they be repatriated? They are illegal immigrants. Some years ago before we were EU members a British friend was escorted by the police out of my country and considered a persona non grata because he had overstayed and caught working illegally. Isn't our law the same for all illegal immigrants, or not?

To R Pace.
Yes, the authorities can do something.
They can stop accepting any ILLEGAL immigrants and repatriate all those that are here or send them on their way on seaworthy boats.

This summer seems to be headed for a record number illegal immigrant landings. This is unsustainable.
Where is the EU solidarity and concrete aid in all this? Or are we better off without it altogether?
Long live taxes and poor taxpayers!

Yes another 127, but please put yourself in their (immigrants and authorities) plight before stating that no adequate action is being taken. Local authorities cannot do more than they are doing - the problem lies with the authorities from where they depart!

Not a single editorial comment from The Times on the futility of Frontex. Not a single pip squeak from any of the political parties on a situation that has long since escalated to being out of control. All of these people are remaining on the Island. No publicly available reliable information on how many illegal immigrants are now on the island - the number must now be in excess of 8000 in a population of 400000, most of whom have been here for years. No to racism and xenophobia - but this does not mean allowing this tiny island to have a sizeable ethnic minority composed in large part of single men with none of the skills and education levels required of a modern ecomony - impossible to integrate. Malta needs to wake up and permanently detain all illegal immigrants until they choose to be repatriated. This means breaking the EU and UN rulebooks. When are we doing this - when there are 20,000 or 30000 migrants on the island?

We are EU members no? Where is the EU? They want to abide by all their laws but they are reluctant to give us a helping hand on this issue. Its unfair that because of our position we are to suffer all this influx together with Italy.

The number of illegal immigrants Malta is taking is scary - the problem of illegal immigration is bad enough in the Uk but Malta is not even the size of London. I check the Times of Malta daily and I am calculating roughly that Malta must be taking in at least 350 immigrants a week, that's 1400 a month. How on earth can you be expected to cope? I also wonder what my holiday photographs will be like from Malta this summer, how about "and this one is the boat coming into Golden Bay with another batch of illegal immigrants whilst we were sunbathing"!!!!!

Wow, another 127 illegal immigrants in 24hrs again.... just after about a week or two ago a group of 163 illegal immigrants reached our islands in less than 24hrs, and not considering the various other groups of approx 27 that arrived in between. And obviously no sign of adequate action from authorities.
