Interest on national debt

A total of €179.1 million were paid as interest on the national debt last year, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said yesterday.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Silvio Parnis, Mr Fenech said €180.2 million were paid in 2006, €174.2 million in 2005, €162.1 million in 2004, €146.8 million in 2003 and €148.6 million in 2002.

So in short, within 6 years the Government paid €991,000,000 in interest alone.

At the moment the National Debt stands at around €3,255,000,000.

Where did all those millions come from?

Who actually forked our all those millions?

Any idea what we shall be paying in interest alone for the current year?
