The crime rate has started to creep up again, with the first four months of the year showing a 4.76 percent increase in crimes compared to the same period last year, the opposition spokesman for home affairs, Gavin Gulia, said today.

The crime rate had declined in 2006 and 2007, but Dr Gulia observed that between January and April this year 4,328 crimes were reported, an increase of 200 over last year.

The increased stemmed from a higher number of thefts – up by 211 to 2,636, Dr Gulia said.
