Climate change committee meets

A recently appointed government Committee on Climate Change got down to work today with a meeting attended by Resources Minister George Pullicino.

The committee’s task is to draw up a report and make recommendations within 20 weeks on how Malta can take measures to address climate change and enable the country to attain its emission targets as agreed with the EU. Malta is obliged to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent and ensure that at least 10 percent of energy is generated from alternative sources by 2020.

Committee chairman David Spiteri Gingell said this was a very important assignment. The committee would be discussing recommendations which can be adopted by the country as well as individuals and households. The recommendations will be based on four pillars: education and communication, policies, the infrastructure and research and innovation.

Subject areas will range from energy conservation in homes to solar energy, wind energy and the location of wind farms.
