Air fares for tickets sold in the European Union will have to give a breakdown of extra fees and charges under new EU rules cleared by a committee of European lawmakers on Tuesday.

Hoping to make internet bookings simpler for consumers, the rules would require websites to list all applicable taxes, charges, surcharges and fees, the European Parliament said.

"This is good news for the travelling public. All too often people are attracted by the cheap price of a flight only to find when they read the small print that it's actually going to cost them much more than they thought," said Scottish pro-independence lawmaker Ian Hudghton.

The new rules, which the transport committee agreed with negotiators from EU governments, are due to be put to a vote by the full European Parliament in July.

Separately, the European Commission - the EU's executive - has warned airlines and the online travel business that they must stop misleading consumers through unfair pricing, hidden charges and terms and conditions not translated properly.
