Maltese oil worker George Scerri has been released by Nigerian kidnappers who seized him just over a month ago, the Maltese government has said.

He was released about 3 a.m. today, a Maltese delegation which had stayed on in Nigeria confirmed.

Mr Scerri appeared to be in a good state of health and is on his way to meet members of his family in Nigeria.

No group ever claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and there was no mention of any ransom having been paid. Mr Scerri had been kidnapped along with a Pakistani worker. Both are employees of the oil company Lonestar, operating in the Nigerian Rivers region.

They were seized in their car while going to work on May 23.
