The General Workers' Union yesterday evening confirmed that it had accepted the government's invitation to meet to discuss the situation at the Malta Shipyards.

In a statement, the union said that although the government had ignored its proposal to set up a special task force, it was prepared to meet the government to discuss how workers' interests could best be safeguarded.

It said it was, therefore, accepting Finance Minister Tonio Fenech's request to meet up with the union later this week, when it will be submitting its proposals in this regard.

The union said it expects the government to be responsible during these discussions and it also expects to be consulted about anything that affects workers.

The government last week announced that Malta Shipyards is to be privatised.
