My daughter, aged 10, and I walked from St Julians to Ta' Xbiex to support breast cancer awareness on Sunday. We were part of a group from Gaffiero's Mon Lung Kung Fu Academy. I am the mother of two future women and also someone who has been waiting for my mammogram appointment since last September.
I would like to congratulate all the people who took part in the walk. I am rather proud of my daughter and myself for what we did. Quite a lot of people of all ages and both sexes took part and a nice band accompanied us some of the way. People in the street signed up in support and gave money.
I would have wished to see more people participate, especially women, but perhaps because of the heat they decided to "support" us from home. I now hope that the government and Minister for Health will do something more about this problem. It made me sad when I asked three women in Sliema to sign up because they looked at me like I had asked for their wallet and told me "No, we don't feel like it". But this is a free country. The activity sent out a message to the sick, telling them they are not alone, and called for action by those who are in a position to do something.
