The illegal boathouses at Armier and other localities have been shamefully allowed to prevail by successive governments presumptively fearing loss of votes.
There have been a number of attempts by previous administrations, even with the intervention of the police, to enforce the law by removing these illegal buildings.
Regrettably however, the law enforcers failed miserably. It, therefore, transpires that we have a sub-group of our society who are seemingly untouchable and consequently allowed to break the law by squatting on public land with impunity. This, to the detriment of other law abiding citizens, and undermining in the process the green credentials and credibility of any self-respecting political and public administration.
I firmly believe that with the sanctioning by the government or any of its agencies, of such illegalities, Malta will turn "back to the future", becoming a banana republic instead of a promising new European Union member state.
If the government persists in sanctioning such illegalities, I strongly urge all environmental NGOs to be prepared to form a common front against such alleged environmental scandal.
