Malta finished in seventh place in the European Championship Division C qualifiers that were played in Scotland after beating Wales 84-68 (26-17, 17-20, 23-14, 18-17) in the positional match yesterday.
This was a more determined Maltese side that went on to win the last game against Wales in the eight-team tournament. In the group stage, Wales had beaten Malta by six points.
The national team won three out of the four sessions with the third quarter being the most decisive.
Omar Said and Steve Schembri had the best game from the five played during the tournament. Said was the team's best scorer with 25 points. M. Mercieca and G. Gauci also had a satisfactory outing with the latter grabbing nine rebounds against the Welsh.
The points for Malta came from S. Schembri 19, Gauci 10, Mercieca 11, D. Schembri 8, Bonnici 4, Sammut 7 and Said 25.
Moldova and Azerbaijan reached the final after eliminating Andorra and Scotland respectively. Gibraltar and San Marino qualified for the play-off for fifth place.
