The Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta, in collaboration with Insuleur, the network of the Island Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the EU and the Gozo Business Chamber, organised the first training programme at the University Gozo Centre in Xewkija.
The programme aims to promote the sustainable development of European island regions. Workshop themes included 'Management of sustainable development', 'Economic vulnerability and resilience', 'Sustainable tourism', 'Environment and climate change' and 'Alternative Energy Resources".
The workshop was inaugurated by Minister Giovanna Debono. Introductory speeches were delivered by George Assonitis, from Insuleur's technical committee, Lino Briguglio, institute director, and Joe Grech, chamber president.
Mr Grech proposed that the EU network should create a vision, a strategic plan whereby contacts will be established within each EU structure so that, instead of derogations and temporary measures, the EU Commission will provide permanent solutions that address permanent structural handicaps.
