Twelve students at Lorenzo Gafà Boys' Secondary School, Vittoriosa, were recently awarded the Bronze award of the President's Award scheme, which presents a variety of challenges to students and assesses their performance in four extra-curricular voluntary activities - physical recreation, service to others, practical skills, and adventure - that students work on either in groups during school hours or individually after school.
The scheme helps students to mature, become more independent and develop skills they find useful to face challenges in life. Above all, it provides youths a form of basic enjoyment and adventure that is slowly being lost in today's sedentary life.
Charles Cilia, assistant director and chairman of the President's Award committee, presented certificates and awards to the students during a brief ceremony on June 12, which included a presentation of the students' work and projects.
The school, which has been involved in the award scheme for the past three years, is hoping to increase the number of students enrolled, and intends to start co-ordinating the Silver and Gold schemes in the near future.
