The post being vacated by the Nationalist Party's general secretary Joe Saliba can only be filled by one of two people after the other contestants mentioned for the job did not submit their nominations.

The only candidates are MP Charlò Bonnici and Valletta mayor Paul Borg Olivier.

The PN's assistant information secretary Jean Pierre Debono unexpectedly decided not to contest and will instead stand for assistant general secretary.

MEP Simon Busuttil and MP Beppe Fenech Adami had been mentioned as potential front-runners but had, early on, signalled they had no intention of contesting.

The call for nominations closed at noon yesterday.

Other nominations were those of Karol Aquilina, Malcolm Mifsud and Marthese Portelli for the post of president of the executive committee, occupied by Jean Pierre Farrugia; Pierre Portelli for the post of president of the administrative council, occupied by Paula Mifsud Bonnici; Peter Darmanin for the post of party treasurer and John Bonello for the post of international secretary.

The elections will be held on Friday evening.
