The authorities should step up action to curb illegal employment and ensure that workers are not exploited, the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin said.
The union was reacting to a court case in which three men were fined for illegally employing foreign workers.
The union said it had received various reports that in the early morning workers of various nationalities would gather in a spot from where they would be taken to work. This constituted serious abuse by employers who took on foreign workers not in possession of a work permit and often abused their situation by paying low wages and giving them poor work conditions, it said.
