Malta's own Cisk Lager is celebrating its 80th birthday this year.
The popular beer's history is linked to that of Malta's industrial and economic evolution and, since its humble beginnings, Cisk Lager has become a key brand winning major international awards over the years.
The beer's history actually goes further back than its 1928 launch when Malta's first privately-owned bank was established by Giuseppe Scicluna in 1840. In those days people hoarded cash under the bed or carried it with them. When the bank established a cheque system, people found it difficult to say the word, instead pronouncing it "cisk", the brewers recount. Giuseppe Scicluna himself soon became known as Iċ-Ċisk and, in 1928, when Scicluna's Bank took over a client's brewery, Cisk Lager was born.
