Government working on plan for alternative energy
Power surcharge increase 'inevitable'
The government is working on a plan on alternative energy and expects to unveil it before the end of this year, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in Brussels.
Energy and food prices were among the topics discussed at the EU summit today, along with the Irish referendum “no” vote on the Lisbon reform treaty.
Dr Gonzi said one of the ways to tackle the surge in oil prices was investment in alternative sources of energy. The government was discussing measures and incentives it could introduce to promote the use of wind and solar energy.
He confirmed that an increase in the power surcharge was inevitable, and said decisions on this issue would be taken in the coming days.

Not a moment too soon! most foreigners I meet ask me, how come your rooftops arent covered with solar panels? also read that there is a technology which generates energy from waves under the sea, is there a possibility for utilisation here around our coast? certainly an EIA study would be required, but I believe all options should be examined.

This Government has been talking about alternative sources for energy for a number of years now. It's about flipping time they put their political rhetoric into an action plan with target dates for implementation. And we're all still waiting for the promised energy-saving lamps, by the way.
