Fireworks safety

I fully agree with the enforcement of fireworks regulations as declared by Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici (Government Determined To Curb Fireworks Abuse, June 17) but the people who put in so much effort to give a great pyrotechnic show have to be helped too.

I fully agree with the enforcement of fireworks regulations as declared by Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici (Government Determined To Curb Fireworks Abuse, June 17) but the people who put in so much effort to give a great pyrotechnic show have to be helped too. Why doesn't the government give them some financial assistance in order to make their factories safer, so that even if an accident were to occur, it would not be a serious one?

I think that if potassium chlorate is not given to factories, potassium perchlorate will be used instead but also some other substances in the formulas in order to have the same product as those using potassium chlorate. Why is Mepa not processing applications for new fireworks factories, so that they may be built in modern ways, thus rendering them safer in case of an accident?

Let us begin a new chapter in the art of fireworks. If new factories are built with the latest materials, they can be used as an example to older factories and the latter built to higher standards. If permits for these factories are given, there will be a drastic reduction in illegal fireworks manufacture, because everyone will have the place and time to pursue the hobby. Action needs to be taken so that this art form will turn over a new leaf, for more safety and satisfaction all round.
