Midi and the Royal Malta Yacht Club

The article entitled Royal Malta Yacht Club Finds New Berth At Last (May 30) requires some clarification since it seems to imply that Midi was responsible for the "eight-year saga of negotiations".

When Midi acquired the property at Manoel Island it was guaranteed vacant possession within certain time frames and was not obliged to provide any alternative premises to the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC). Midi's negotiations were conducted with its contractual counterparty namely the government and not with the RMYC. Midi's position on the issue has been consistent all throughout and was put forward by a negotiating team that has remained intact since 1996, that is before the conclusion of the deed of emphyteusis in the year 2000. It is government and the RMYC who have seen ministers, government officials, and last but not least, commodores and committees come and go, sometimes bringing new and conflicting agendas to the table.

It should be pointed out that today, nearly eight years later, we have not disturbed RMYC's occupation of that part of Fort Manoel which is used by them as their premises.

In fact, we had to reschedule our restoration works at Fort Manoel to accommodate RMYC, so much so, that looking at Fort Manoel from Valletta, all the repairs and restoration works on the south facing bastions are complete other than the Couvre Porte.

George Bonello du Puis is reported to have stated that Midi had "lost out" as a result of RMYC relocating their premises outside the boundaries of Manoel Island. Mr Bonello du Puis is of course entitled to his opinion and we congratulate RMYC on successfully concluding the matter.

We trust that with this "saga" now behind, all the parties concerned can get on with their everyday business.

I tend to agree with Mr Ben Muscat as, as he rightly said, the agreements Midi has is with the government, and not with any entity. Gzira United FC is going through the same saga. We have been dealing with different Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and the like for 10 years. Our football club is in shambles as we have no idea when we will be moving to the new premises on Manoel Island, so we cannot spend money on maintenance, only to have the place demolished soon after. I have also written numerous letters to government departments. Our club is dying a slow a painful death. We are losing children to other clubs simply because they have better facilities than ours such as Pembroke, Melita Luxol St. Andrews & Msida. Our nursery has dwindled from 200 children to just under 80 this year! In a couple of years this will be closed down. Can the Hon Minister Austin Gatt HELP!?

Benjamin, MALTA IS A REPUBLIC , so the word ROYAL is NOT permissible, please in future drop the royal and just say THE MALTA YACHT CLUB.

It seems to me that Ben Muscat is really sore about the RMYC saga having lost the most prestigious and oldest Yacht Club in Europe on MIdi Island purely for obstinacy in not recognising the Yacht Club as an incentive to attract their clients as prospective investors in Midi.

No wonder our Commodore got relieved with the developments that our Club is getting OUT of the island at last........I bet if we got stuck in there Ben would have never let go from hassling RMYC.... So yes it is good riddance, we thank Minister Austin Gatt for his prompt and positive response to solve and retain RMYC with dignity and respect.....

For me that is a patched up bastion and soon they will have to restore what they think that they have restored......shame on messing our bastions and someone should point it out to MIdi.....
