Suspended sentence for vandalising eight cars
A man from Ħamrun was yesterday handed down an 18-month jail term suspended for three years after he pleaded guilty to damaging eight cars in acts of vandalism.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard John Xerri, 37, admit to damaging the cars over a period of one year. After taking into consideration the amount of damage caused, which ranged from €116.57 (Lm50) to €1,165 (Lm500), Magistrate Clarke handed down the sentence.
Police Inspectors Ramon Mercieca and Joseph Agius prosecuted. Lawyers José Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared for Mr Xerri.

i was one of the victims. i had 2 cars damaged and on 1 of them he did it 3 times. after all this i sold the 2 cars because i thought that someone was making a peronal vandalism. i didnt report to the police as i said i sold both cars for this reason

Why not add an automatic jail sentence, unless there is a full restitution for the damages caused within one month? Setting someone free (to do the same thing again possibly) seems very lenient. Also did the perpetrator 'turn himself in' thereby receiving a suspended sentence, or was he caught and tried to conceal his crimes, but 'let off' by the magistrate?
