Denmark's Tom Kristensen won the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race for a record eighth time yesterday, leading Audi to a dramatic victory over favourites Peugeot. Kristensen, driving the no.2 Audi with team-mates Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish, completed 381 laps in a rain-affected race. The trio finished less than one lap ahead of the no.7 Peugeot of Nicolas Minassian, Marc Gene and 1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve.

Frenchman Franck Montagny brought the no.9 Peugeot home in third place as Audi claimed an eighth win in nine years and a hat-trick of victories in a diesel-powered car.
