Two councils better than one
I do not agree with Graziella Galea, mayor of St Paul's Bay, that there is no need for a separate council for the Qawra-Buġibba area. In her letter of June 5 entitled Buġibba Already Has Its Own Local Council, Ms Galea admitted in the last paragraph that there is need for more financing and manpower. I think that it would be better to have a separate council as then there would be two councils taking care of the needs of the St Paul's Bay area. I think that the local council has to take care of a very extensive area which, apart from Qawra and Buġibba, includes Wardija, Burmarrad, Xemxija, San Martin and a part of Bidnija.
Qawra has its own parish but not its own local council. I think that everyone who frequents this zone will agree with me that it is being neglected by the authorities and it's a disgrace that a tourist area like this is left in such a bad state.
It should be noted that some areas near the Buġibba square are cleaned everyday but what about those near the Qawra parish church and the bus terminus? These places are frequented by residents and tourists alike but are not cleaned regularly.
Another thing that has not been considered is the fact that the elderly residents have to go all the way to St Paul's Bay if they need to get anything from the office of the local council.
Two separate councils for the St Paul's Bay area would better serve both the Qawra-Buġibba area and the rest of St Paul's Bay.

The issue is not how many councils we have; knowledge, efficiency and discharging one's duty is what counts. I would rather see one council manned with the sufficient right workers and equipment doing their job and upholding the laws consistanty. At the end of the day it is the results that count. Right now we are losing the game in St. Paul's Bay, Bugibba and Qawra. Shame on all of us.

How very right you are B Agius, I lived for 40 years in the borough of Ealing, Greater London, on the last estimate there was a population of 350,000. under one council. Now where I live in Sannat we got a population of 1,900 and some of them are foreign residents who are only here for a period of time during the year, so their dwellings are always closed, Yet we have five councillors. The whole of Gozo has a population of 31,000 yet we have 13 councils, ridiculous. Please take note Chris Said.

i also cant agree with Rita Linstead, St. Paul's Bay Council is by far one of the the best we have on this island. If the residents, be it permanent or the summer ones, care a bit more about their localities we wouldnt have all that rubbish on the streets, cleanliness begins at home after all. Also is it not time that we address Ms Galea with her real title, when we write in english,as it should be mayoress not mayor ,if im not mistaken.

I'm sorry but this is laughable. Every one knows - with more Government you generally achieve less. In most other countries, Councils are generally bigger than the whole of Malta and moves to make them bigger so as to reduce duplication etc are common. In Malta there already exists a ridiculous situation, especially given its size, with so many Councils - the outcomes also, I think, speak for themsleves. Malta should have six councils or so, properly funded with proper CEOs to run them as busineesses for the citizens. That way councils might be able to afford proper modern machinery to clean streets and get rid of the brooms!
