Steve Abela has been elected president of Premier League club Sliema Wanderers. Abela, who occupied the dual post of Team Manager and Public Relations Officer last season, takes over from Robert Arrigo who did not seek re-election.

The Sliema committee for season 2008-09 was elected by members during the club's annual general meeting last Thursday. Toni Meli and Nikki Dimech have taken up the two vice-president posts while Mario Debono succeeds John Bugeja as secretary.

The AGM unanimously approved a proposal to name Arrigo as honorary president of Sliema Wanderers.

In a statement, the club thanked Arrigo and Bugeja for the service they gave to Sliema over the years.
