Marie-Klaire Farrugia, specialist registrar in paediatric surgery and urology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, has been awarded a prestigious two-year sub-specialisation fellowship in paediatric urology.

She is the first Maltese to be awarded the qualification, and among a handful of her peers worldwide.

Ms Farrugia completed her training in neonatal and childhood surgery in London and Oxford, obtaining her FRCS in paediatric surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, earlier this year. The sub-specialisation will allow her to broaden her expertise in kidney, bladder and genital surgery in babies and children, including management and reconstruction of antenatally-diagnosed urinary tract abnormalities.

Earlier this year, Ms Farrugia was also awarded a research doctorate by the University of London, for her research into the morphology, physiology and antenatal urodynamics of the fetal bladder, carried out at the Institute of Child Health, University College, London.

Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including BJU International, the Journal of Pediatric Urology, and the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.
