As a patron of the local theatre for quite a number of years both from behind the scenes as well as in the audience, I find the new fees of the Manoel Theatre to a non-commercial, non-profit theatre company such as MADC absolutely outrageous (The Sunday Times, June 8).
The asking price of €58,000 (Lm24,900) is nearly €12,000 (Lm5,000) more than the budget allocated for the Eurovision Song Contest, which is €46,688 (Lm20,043).
Let's remember that MADC has added so much value to the national cultural scene for nearly a century. The National Theatre should be supporting the arts and not suffocating theatre companies and causing them to move out. Shame on the decision-takers.
