While Malta already exempts holders of diplomatic passports from visa requirements, the United Arab Emirates are ready to exempt Maltese visitors from visa requirements as long as this is reciprocal. But Malta, as a member of the Schengen Agreement, cannot unilaterally exempt UAE citizens from visa requirements unless this is adopted as common EU policy.

Answering a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (MLP), Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said diplomatic efforts are ongoing, in the light of recent developments of strong investments by the UAE and in the light of economic benefits left behind by Maltese visitors on holiday or business, to convince the UAE authorities that it would also be to their benefit to waive visa requirements for Maltese visitors.
