The first Civic Amenity Site to be built in Gozo will open near Xewkija in October.

Three Civil Amenity Sites have already been opened in Malta, and Resources Minister George Pullicino said today that he was confident the new one in Gozo would help reduce the problem of illegal tipping in the countryside.

Civic Amenity Sites enable the public to dispose of domestic bulky waste in a lawful manner.

The Gozo Civic Amenity Site will be operated as a separate waste collection point mainly for the waste streams generated by households, but it may also accept small quantities of waste from other entities, the Resources Ministry said in a statement. This would help reduce the amount of waste going to the temporary Transfer Station at Qortin as all source-segregated waste, including white goods, old furniture, tyres, DIY construction waste and many other types of waste would start being accepted in the new facility.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, who accompanied Mr Pullicino on a tour of the site, said the former Qortin landfill would now be converted into a family park.
