Last year, GasanMamo Insurance Ltd launched Sana Healthcare, a range of private medical insurance products, adding to the already established insurance products of business, travel, home, marine and motor offered at GasanMamo Insurance Ltd. GasanMamo Insurance is Sana's underwriter and operator. The Times Business interviewed Mark Mamo, Sana Healthcare manager, about the success of this new product since its launch last year.
What's the feedback on Sana since you launched it a year ago?
The feedback we have had has been very positive. The medical insurance market has not had a new company offering medical insurance products for a while, so the introduction of Sana Healthcare has given people another option when choosing to take out medical insurance. Current GasanMamo clients were also pleased that we are now offering this range, allowing us to look after even more of their insurance requirements.
Does this feedback meet your expectations?
Our expectations have always been down to earth; we believed before, and still do now, that GasanMamo, as the market leader in personal lines insurance business, could take on this challenge. GasanMamo clients are happy with the products and service we are able to offer and we have now been able to extend our product portfolio while keeping the same high quality of service clients have come to expect from us. I can say that our expectations have been surpassed in several areas.
What's the average age of your Sana clients?
It is ideal to take out private medical insurance at a young age. Requests for cover come in from a broad cross-section of age groups which is representative of society. We cater for all these and are very satisfied with the age mix on our book.
Do clients go for full refund policies or for policies with limited cover?
Currently the Maltese medical insurance market is not as developed as markets in other countries such as the UK, so there is a tendency for people to opt for a limited cover plan. With time this will change and as this sector develops more people will recognise the value derived from increased cover and opt for full refund plans.
As I said earlier, one also has to realise that timing is important when taking out medical insurance. It is best to start young when one is healthy, as this will reduce the chances of one having any exclusions on one's policy. Choosing a full refund plan as early as possible is also important as one will be underwritten when upgrading one's cover. More and more people are realising that medical insurance should be purchased at an early stage when one is healthy and not something one purchases when one gets ill or requires treatment. In case one requires treatment medical insurance allows you to focus on your recovery in the knowledge that the financial side of things is being taken care of as well as broadening your options for care.
What makes a client choose Sana Healthcare rather than any other medical insurance policy offered on the islands?
When taking out a Sana Healthcare policy, a client knows that s/he is going to find all the support required. According to independent surveys that have been carried out, the public has a very positive impression of GasanMamo Insurance. This is supported by in-house client satisfaction surveys that confirm that over 94 per cent of claimants are satisfied or very satisfied with the service and claim settlements that they have received. This is coupled with the fact that we have kept the prices of the Sana Healthcare plans as low as possible in order to make them affordable to the Maltese public. Our medical insurance department will, of course, focus on offering our clients the outstanding service that GasanMamo Insurance has become renowned for. We know that health is an important and sometimes sensitive issue, and that is why we give our customers our full personal attention.
Is GasanMamo Insurance Ltd now offering the full range of insurance services?
GMI operates in the non-life market and, in addition to all commercial insurance covers, we offer home, motor, boat, travel and medical. Naturally there is a list of individual policies that would be too numerous to list here and now. With the exception of medical insurance we have been operating in insurance dating back to 1947. We have developed with the Maltese insurance market and have also played a significant role in the market's development.
