A "suspicious object", which the police said included gunpowder, a light bulb, a timer and electric wires, was found yesterday in a private field in Wied Dalam, close to Borg in-Nadur in Birżebbuġa.

The police said the assembled item was found in a plastic bag. Personnel from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit of the Armed Forces of Malta were called to check the item.

The police, who were alerted about the "suspicious object" by a person, did not say whether the object was a bomb.

Close to where the suspicious item was found lie archaeological remains dating back to Neolithic time and an Enemalta fuel underground installation that is fed from the Ħas Saptan storage plant.

Duty Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna opened an inquiry.
