World Cup finalists France were held to a goalless draw today by unfancied Romania in their opening match in the group, widely regarded as the toughest section of the tournament.
The French had most of the play and pressed constantly but found no way of unlocking a mass Romanian defence, creating few chances.
Missing injured captain and midfield inspiration Patrick Vieira, as well as striker Thierry Henry, the French did little to justify their status as one of the tournament favourites.
The other two teams in the group, world champions Italy and Netherlands, meet in Berne later on today.
