A man who suffered multiple stab wounds managed to drive himself all the way from Ċirkewwa to Mater Dei Hospital early yesterday morning.
Mark Anthony Casha, 28, of Swieqi, was in a car with a 24-year-old woman when they were attacked by two men at about 2 a.m., police said.
The alleged aggressors, a 63-year-old from Rabat and a 25-year-old from Dingli, were arrested on the spot and are being questioned.
Although severely injured, the victim is in a stable condition and not critical, according to sources. They said that his deepest wound just missed a vital organ. The woman was hospitalised some time later but her injuries are not serious.
The motive for the attack is not yet clear, though an inquiry is being held.
Despite the severity of the case, medical sources said it was not extraordinary for someone sustaining such an injury to drive a car. However, his condition was likely to have become critical if he suffered substantial blood loss.
Yesterday's case is reminiscent of an incident last December, when a 29-year-old Briton was shot three times in Għarb and drove himself to the Gozo ferry where he was found and taken to Mater Dei by ambulance.
