Eight candidates yesterday submitted their nominations for the two deputy leadership posts within the Labour Party.

Carmelo Abela, Chris Cardona, Anglu Farrugia and Jose Herrera submitted their nomination for the post of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs while Toni Abela, Clyde Joe Cassar, Gavin Gulia and Joe Mifsud are contesting the post of deputy leader for party affairs.

Candidates could submit their nominations between Thursday and yesterday, but all eight candidates left submission of their candidature for the last day.

Party delegates will be voting for the two deputy leaders during an extraordinary general conference on Thursday.

If none of the contestants receives 50 per cent plus one of valid votes, a run-off between the two contenders with the highest number of votes will be held on Friday.

The two current deputy leaders, Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon, have decided not to stand.
