Polish-born forward Lukas Podolski gave Germany a 1-0 lead over Poland at halftime in their match in Klagenfurt this evening.

Three times winners Germany had the upper hand in the first half and in the 20th minute Podolski steered the ball into an empty net off a cross from Miroslav Klose.

Germany, looking for their first win at a European Championship finals since they clinched the 1996 final in England, had an early chance in the fourth minute after Klose fed a pass to Mario Gomez, but the striker failed to convert from point-blank range.

Poland, who have never beaten Germany, upped the pressure but Maciej Zurawski shot wide in the 36th minute.
