Psychologist and training consultant Patrick Psaila was invited as keynote speaker to an international conference on 'Global leadership', held recently at Anglia Ruskin University in Essex. Other speakers came from Finland, Switzerland and the UK.

The aim of the conference was to explore new models of leadership that can meet the challenges that organisations face in the 21st century. The 'Global Fitness Framework' was presented as a basis for discussion and exploration. This has been developed by Jonathan Smith and John Rayment from Anglia Ruskin University.

The GFF enables leaders, analysts and researchers to assess the global fitness of individuals, organisations, groups and societies to perform their roles in facing challenges faced by humanity in the areas of business, health, education, environment, etc.

The framework adopts a holistic approach meeting the physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual needs as well as considering the strength, stamina and suppleness of individuals, groups and societies. The Global Fitness Framework is being further developed and researched from various perspectives by practitioners and academics. It is envisaged that it will become a key tool in the area of leadership and organisational development.

Mr Psaila, who reviewed the framework from a psychological perspective, focused on the importance of value-based leadership that embraces trust, respect and integrity as its driving force. He spoke about the negative impact of leaders who lose themselves in the cycle of aggressive, short-term results orientations that often lead to deep discontent and dissonance in organisations that seem to lose all sense of humanity.

He also made a strong business case for leaders and organisations who manage the fine balance between profitability and human integrity, two factors that need not be mutually exclusive. Mr Psaila argued that developing emotionally and spiritually intelligent leaders and organisations can be one of the solutions towards facing future business challenges.

Finally, he presented a practical working model for leaders in organisations to assess personal and organisational alignment between core purpose/mission; core values/beliefs; competency development and actual actions and behaviours. This model is developed to enable leaders to constantly assess their effectiveness and the impact they are having on their organisation. Furthermore, the model can also serve as a self-care model that supports leaders in their delicate balance between meeting all the demands that comes with their role and keeping themselves 'fit' to achieve sustainable success in what they do.

Mr Psaila has developed various programmes for leaders and managers in organisations aimed at helping participants to develop holistically, increasing personal and organisational effectiveness. Among these is the Leading Edge Programme, which was already successfully implemented in various organisations.
