Ujfalusi: Czech Republic captain Tomas Ujfalusi has shrugged off a slight abdominal muscle injury and said yesterday he was fit to face Switzerland in today's Euro 2008 opener. The 30-year-old defender, skippering the side at the tournament in place of the injured Tomas Rosicky, missed some training on Wednesday but took part in the full session the next day.

Panucci: Italy defender Christian Panucci limped out of training yesterday after suffering what looked to be a right knee injury. He was expected to play at right back for the world champions in their Euro 2008 Group C opener against Netherlands in Berne on Monday. The 35-year-old received treatment on the sidelines for some minutes before gingerly walking back to the dressing room.

Steaua Bucharest: UEFA is to review Steaua Bucharest's entry into next season's Champions League after the club was this week docked points by the Romanian Soccer Federation (FRF) over allegations of bribery. Steaua were docked seven points on Wednesday by the FRF after officials and players were found guilty of corruption charges, but the deduction meant Steaua still finish second in the top division and are eligible to play in the third qualifying round of next season's Champions League.

Gascoigne: Tottenham Hotspur said yesterday that they are fully supporting former midfielder Paul Gascoigne who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act this week. The 41-year-old, who won more than 50 caps for England, was detained for up to six months on Tuesday after a series of alcohol and mental health problems. Gary Mabbutt, a team-mate of Gascoigne's while he was at Spurs between 1988-1991 said "Gazza", as he is known to football fans around the world, will now hopefully receive the care he needs to recover.

Maldini: Milan captain Paolo Maldini has decided to delay his retirement by a season, the Serie A club said yesterday. Maldini had planned to quit in May, but was expected to bow to pressure from club bosses and team-mates to play another season.
