Two workers were slightly injured when scaffolding six storeys high collapsed in busy Bisazza Street, Sliema yesterday afternoon.
A third worker was also taken to hospital suffering from shock, the police said.
Two workers who were standing on the lower part of the scaffolding jumped off when they realised what was happening and escaped unhurt.
Passers-by ran away in panic as pipes and planks crashed to the ground. The three men were on the scaffolding.
Part of the structure landed on top of the entrance of an underground public convenience and shop windows and cars were damaged.
The scaffolding was being dismantled during renovation works on the façade of a block of apartments and underlying shops in the square near the Plaza shopping complex.
Members of the Civil Protection Department and a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital were quickly on the scene and officials from the Health and Safety Authority carried out an inspection.
The police are investigating.
