Eight to contest MLP deputy leaders' election
Eight nominations have been submitted for the election of deputy leaders of the Labour Party, the MLP electoral commission said today.
The period for nominations opened on Thursday and closed today.
Carmelo Abela, Chris Cardona, Anglu Farrugia and Jose' Herrera are seeking the post of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs. The post is currently held by Charles Mangion, who is not standing for re-election.
Another four nominations were submitted for the post of deputy leader, party affairs.
The candidates are Toni Abela, Clyde Joe Cassar, Gavin Gulia and Joe Mifsud. Whoever is elected will succeed Michael Falzon, who is also not seeking re-election.
Voting will take place on Thursday and should no candidate/s win an absolute majority, run-offs will be held on Friday between the top candidates for the elections for the two posts.

I personally believe that certain vital positions such as those for the deputy leadership and/or secretary general should be selected by the leader of the party himself and not chosen by the delegates. The leader needs to surround himself with people who are capable of filling those positions including people he can trust. This is the same when a newly elected PM chooses his new ministerial cabinet following an election.

Meanwhile Joe Debono Grech has resigned from the MLP but will keep his seat in Parliament! That means one less for the Opposition. There's a lot of bitterness about Joe Muscat's election to the leadership and Michael Falzon did not mince his words about the party machine and how it elected its anointed one. While wishing the contenders to the next ranks all the best of luck, changes in those positions is not going to be enough to get the MLP back on track. JM has a lot of obligations to look after and cleaning the party is neigh near impossible for him. There are more sailors jumping ship now than before!

All the nominees for the deputy leaderships are valid people. I am sure that the party delegates will once again make good chices. I think the present secretary general should be replaced with someone more mature.

All the contenders are valid people and relatively young. Good luck to all of them since they are all good and fit with the new leader's approach. Following this election the party needs to re-elect the administration right away which would then make it ready to start business. I hope the delegates choose the right people also to make part of a new administration. It is important to change so that the needed reform in the party will take place quickly and without barriers. I see Alfred Grixti as the perfect secretary general to join Joseph Muscat and his new deputies.

@ Maria Pace
I agree with you Maria , Gavin Gulia is a good choice for the Party and country. He has a good , long , steady vision plan , for our beloved Party to stand up on his feet again. He will be a delicious ingredient in the revolutionary recipe that our new Leader , Dr Joseph Muscat , is preparing for a new Labour start in " Generazzjoni Rebbieha".
Good Luck to you Gavin and all other candidates.

May the best one, like the election of the leader, win. God be with you all.

I think that delegates now have to choose two deputy leaders who can easily combine their talents with that of Dr Muscat. I believe that delegates must consider the intelligence, the rationality and the extraversion of the candidates they choose.

I sincerely hope that Chris Cardona & Gavin Gulia win the contest. They are of utmost integrity, and would do the MLP a great deal of good. Carmelo Abela would be another suitable choice

I would dare a gamble on this not being what the majority expected.

I hope we see valid people like Gavin Gulia in the party administration although I have to say that they all hold the party's and country's interest beyond any doubt.
