Preparations were in full swing yesterday for today's 12-hour charity entertainment event to raise funds for Razzett tal-Ħbiberija.

The charity, which will kick off at midday and be aired on all local television stations, has a two-pronged aim, the park's chief executive officer, Nathan Farrugia, said.

"We want to showcase what we do and increase the public's awareness of the programmes we offer while at the same time raise funds to finance these programmes," he said.

Mr Farrugia said although people were aware of Razzett's work to help people with a disability, they did not understand how this was carried out.

"Many think that the horse riding part of the programme is solely leisure, but this is not the case. Although children enjoy themselves, they will also be working on their posture, their social skills and boosting their self esteem," he explained.

Today's charity show, hosted by popular personalities including Fabrizio Faniello, will also feature clips showing how Razzett tal-Ħbiberija's services have had an impact on its clients' lives.

The organisers are hoping to raise some €200,000 to make some inroads into the €1 million-odd annual operating costs. During a visit to the Marsascala park last Saturday, Social Policy Minister John Dalli said the government was prepared to give a helping hand to ensure that the services available would expand and are offered to more people.

The event will be aired on TVM, Net TV, One TV, Smash TV, Education 22 and Melita Channel 30. "We want people to watch the event to understand our work and if they like what we do, to help us out," Mr Farrugia said.

All money raised during Charity 12 will go towards sustaining the park's operations. Money can be donated by calling on 5004 9095 to donate €15 (Lm6.44) or sending a text message on 5061 8926 to donate €6.99 (Lm3).
